Nearly $1 million in speeding fines issued at Auckland's new Waterview Tunnel in just six weeks

Over 9000 speeding fines, totalling nearly $1 million, have already been issued to motorists using Auckland's new Waterview Tunnel.

Police released news of the staggering amount, which was racked up in the six weeks since four police operated safe speed cameras went live on July 21.

Figures out today show nearly $1 million worth of speeding tickets have been issued in just six weeks.

The cameras are in place to enforce the 80km speed limit, with police saying motorists were given advance warning before the cameras went live through NZ Transport Agency signage.

From July 21 to August 31, the safe speed cameras at Waterview Tunnel issued 9756 infringement notices for excessive speed, from a total of 1,520,767 vehicle trips through the tunnel.

Police say this equates to six in every 1000 vehicles going through the tunnel (or 0.6 per cent) incurring an infringement notice. The total infringement fee value of the notices generated by the safe speed cameras was $948,220.

"Unfortunately, the infringement data released for the Waterview Tunnel shows that a large number of road users are simply driving too fast.

"The speed limit set for Waterview Tunnel is there to keep all road users safe and a crash would likely cause significant harm and traffic disruption," national manager of road policing Superintendent Steve Greally said.

Police say the fines are not a revenue-gathering exercise and are there to promote safety within and around the tunnel.

"The police do not receive any of the fines associated with drivers exceeding the speed limit - all of this goes to the Government’s consolidated fund.

"Success to Police would be issuing no infringements," Mr Greally says.
