Napier locals told to stop having baths, flushing toilets as torrential rain swamps wastewater system

September 5, 2018
The weather’s packing in a bit over the next couple of days, says TVNZ 1 Breakfast’s Matty McLean.

Napier residents are being told not to take baths or flush toilets for the next 36 hours because the city's wastewater system has been swamped by a day of torrential rain.

"Our wastewater system has been overloaded by 24 hours of torrential rain. We're asking Napier to please keep their household wastewater to a minimum for the next 36 hours," Napier City Council said in a Facebook post about 4pm today.

"DO NOT take baths or flush toilets unless absolutely necessary, keep showers short and leave the washing and dishes for another day," the post read.

The council said these measures "will help us get back on track".
