Man killed in workplace accident in Wellington the fourth fatality in a month

March 12, 2019

Worksafe's investigating the death of a Fulton Hogan employee on Wellington's Ngauranga Gorge.

Police say initial indications are that the 25-year-old man died after being hit by a work vehicle while working on SH1 south of Johnsonville.

Emergency services attended the crash just before 9.30pm last night. The man was found dead at the scene.

Another Fulton Hogan worker received moderate injuries, although it’s unclear whether that person was also hit by a car.

First Union, which represents a large number of road workers, says this is the fourth death of a contractor in a month.

It says it's a timely reminder to drive carefully around people working on our roads.

This morning Transport, Logistics and Manufacturing secretary Jared Abbott released a statement saying: “Our hearts go out to the friends and whanau who will be dealing with this shocking news today.

"We do not know the full circumstances that have led to this fourth fatality inside a month, but it is a timely reminder to drive carefully around people working on our roads; they work hard to ensure our roads are safer for everyone.

"The speed signs aren’t a target, drivers need to slow down around road workers.”

The southbound lanes of State Highway 1 were closed but have now been reopened, according to a spokesperson from NZTA.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
