A 19-year-old man has been charged after three people were injured, one critically, at a Hawke's Bay marae last week.

Police were called to Moteo Marae in Puketapu on Saturday, August 25, at around 10pm.

The man appeared in Hastings District Court yesterday on charges of injuring with intent and has been remanded in custody.

Police say they have more witnesses to speak to and further arrests are likely.

In a statement, Moteo Marae chairperson Peter Eden said he was "extremely disappointed by the actions of those that went onto the marae grounds and caused problems".

"Violence is never tolerated anywhere, especially on a marae, so to have that level of violence occur at Moteo where three people were injured is terrible, and our thoughts go out to those whānau members who are recovering," Mr Eden said.

"This behaviour is totally unacceptable and the marae will be working hard to make sure that this never happens again.

"Moteo Marae has always been a peaceful and safe place for our whānau and we want it to remain that way."
