'Making New Zealand great again' - Winston Peters channels Trump during exchange with Simon Bridges

September 26, 2018

Winston Peters channelled US President Donald Trump during an exchange with Simon Bridges in Parliament today when he said the Government is "making New Zealand great again".

Mr Peters was answering on behalf of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern during Question Time this afternoon when he made the remark.

National Party leader Simon Bridges was once again asking about the Derek Handley saga and text messages exchanged between him and Ms Ardern.

"When Jacinda Ardern responded by text message to Mr Handley 'I'll talk to the team about how we can make use of you and your kind offer.'

"Does she stand by her statement in New York yesterday that finding a role for Mr Handley in New Zealand was quote 'certainly not the expectation I was setting there, he wanted to catch up I was simply responding to that request.'

"Does every one of her friends who simply wants to catch up get a text response saying 'I'll talk to the team about how we can make use of you and your kind offer'?" Mr Bridges asked.

Political Editor Jessica Mutch McKay has the latest on the chief technology officer saga.

Mr Peters then responded, working one of Mr Trump's favourite lines into his answer.

"First of all, the Prime Minister is someone who does attract attention, unlike some leaders, secondly, she is a very kind-hearted person and seeks to help any New Zealander wanting to swarm back home to the great country that we're building, now that we're making New Zealand great again.

"The facts matter, and the CTO job was not raised," Mr Peters said.

This morning US President Donald Trump highlighted US gains under his watch as he opened his address to the UN General Assembly - and it got him a laugh from the audience.

President Trump told leaders from around the world this morning the American economy is "booming like never before" and his administration has accomplished more in less than two years than almost any other administration.
