Saturday’s Vaxathon was a big success.

Māori have led the way with the highest proportion of first doses on Super Saturday, with 50 per cent of all Māori vaccinations being the first dose.

The Ministry of Health says 130,002 people rolled up their sleeve to get the jab on Super Saturday, with the total finalised on Sunday.

Eighty-five per cent of New Zealanders have now had their first dose, given a two per cent burst on Saturday. Sixty-five per cent of the eligible population are fully vaccinated, up three per cent on Saturday.

Across the country, 10,825 Māori went out and got their first dose on Saturday and a further 10,877 got their second dose, which has helped Māori vaccination levels jump a huge 5.4 per cent since last Sunday.

Overall, 65 per cent of the Māori population or 375,000 people have now had their first dose - 250,000 of those are fully vaccinated.

Māori vaccinations in Hawke’s Bay jumped a massive three per cent on Super Saturday, with over 1,100 getting their first dose.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the day has given a huge boost to New Zealand's vaccination rollout, thanking New Zealanders for getting behind the initiative.

“People across the motu embraced Super Saturday like their communities’ lives depended on it. It was inspiring to witness as we know the Covid-19 vaccine is key to our efforts to control the virus."

Auckland is sitting just shy of the Government's target, with 89 per cent of the city's eligible population having now had their first dose.

“Auckland did incredibly well with its biggest ever vaccination day and I congratulate and thank everyone there who stepped forward to protect themselves, their whānau and their community," Bloomfield said.

Of the 41,081 Aucklanders vaccinated on Saturday, 9,039 were first doses and 32,042 were second doses.

It’s hoped the city will reach the 90 per cent target in coming days, with only 20,360 more people needed to get their first dose.
