A 39 year-old man has been left with non-life threatening injuries after being shot in Lower Hutt overnight in a gang-related incident.

Police said they were advised of "a male having been shot in Stokes Valley" just before midnight who was later taken to hospital via an ambulance to receive treatment for his moderate injuries.

It was also confirmed the Armed Offenders Squad was called out to the property on Hanson Street to assist after the incident.

He's still in hospital this morning.

Police said they then received a barrage of calls regarding further shots in the are but were able to believe the sounds were fireworks being let off instead.
