Listeria outbreak triggers nationwide mung bean recall

August 10, 2021

A listeria outbreak has triggered a nationwide recall of mung beans and mesclun salad from supermarket shelves.

This affects customers who have bought the Living Foods Ltd Spring Life brand of mung beans in the North Island, or received them in their Woop or Kai Box meals around the country.

The Pams brand of sweet mango mesclun salad with dressing sold nationwide has also been contaminated.

New Zealand Food Safety has issued an advisory, encouraging consumers to return the products in question to the retailers for a refund or throw them out.

National manager of food compliance services, Jenny Bishop, says if the bacteria is consumed, it can have serious side effects for vulnerable people.

“Such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies people with weakened immune systems and elderly people.”

“For those high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of two to three weeks (or longer) before symptoms appear.”

The effects for healthy individuals is less severe and are only likely to experience a mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

“If you’ve consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice,” Bishop said.

There have been no reports of people getting sick thus far to New Zealand Food Safety, with the producer having begun their recall of the products.

More information about the products and where they are sold can be found on the Ministry of Primary Industries’ website .
