The book about the sailing legend hits shelves next week and 1 NEWS had a sneak preview.

Kiwi kids are getting the chance to learn about one of New Zealand's sailing legends with a new children's book telling the story of Sir Peter Blake's life hitting shelves next week.

The story is the fourth installment in a series of children's books about great New Zealand heroes, all written by award winning New Zealand author David Hill.

David Hill says Sir Peter was "a man who was both wonderfully modest and wonderfully accomplished. And he was a person, the more I read about him, the more stories I found out about him".

The book, Hero of the Sea, details some of Sir Peter Blake's greatest triumphs - his America's Cup wins in 1995 and 2000 and his deep commitment to environmental causes.

Former colleagues say it's a fitting way to celebrate his life and legacy.

Team New Zealand crewmate Kevin Shoebridge said, "The book's a great way of teaching kids what he was passionate about and what he did and what he achieved in his life."

It was also given the green light by Pippa, Lady Blake.

Mr Hill says Lady Blake is thrilled to have Peter's environmental work acknowledged the way the book has tried to.

It's been nearly 17 years since Sir Peter Blake died, but for those closest to him, the book is a special tribute to an old friend.

The book will be in stores from Monday.
