Karori community unite to replace eye-catching road cone on top of ponga tree

As Arrun Soma explains the Wellington suburb has rallied together in the face of adversity.

A Karori community has been mourning the loss of one of its well-known features.

A solitary ponga trunk, which was only noticed for the random road cone at its tip is not the same after someone, somewhere, somehow - removed it, without the consent of the community.

"People feel like they can’t live in Karori anymore without the cone there," says one local.

Some have named it a sick, vile act, an atrocity, and even called for an inquiry.

Residents say it was "iconic" and unmissable and they want it returned.

No one could say how it got up there in the first place but the tight-knit town has rallied together to bring it back.

Sam Redhill and his father, who own a cherry-picking business, teamed up to right what was wrong and bring joy back to their suffering community.

With the cone now replaced and firmly bolted to the tree, it has now been re-named: Karori’s Christmas tree.
