Kapiti Coast businesses calling for fairer petrol prices after BP practices exposed in leaked email

Businesses on the Kapiti Coast are calling for fairer petrol pricing after the practices of fuel company BP were exposed in a leaked email.

The email from BP revealed a plan to raise fuel prices in the lower North Island.

Shoe store owner Angela Buswell spends most of her time driving around the lower North Island and sees how petrol prices vary in the region.

"As a small business we actually have to wear that because we don't then turn around and say to our consumer: 'Actually this week the price of shoes have gone up, because of petrol'," Ms Buswell told 1 NEWS.

The Kapiti Coast Chamber of Commerce agrees that those costs seriously impact local businesses.

"We're at the whim of petrol companies and we will need to rethink how we do business and how we do some of our pricing," Heather Hutchings from the Kapiti Coast Chamber of Commerce said.

A report last year found prices in the South Island and Wellington, where there's less competition, have increased at a faster rate than the rest of the North Island.

The Energy Minister says she will meet with BP to discuss its pricing later this week.
