Jacinda Ardern heads to APEC summit for first big test on international stage

November 9, 2017

The PM is heading to Vietnam where she'll rub shoulders with the likes of presidents Trump and Putin.

Jacinda Ardern will face a big test as Prime Minister as she leaves the country for the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation leaders forum in Vietnam today.

The APEC forum takes place in the Vietnamese city of Da Nang, with the main meetings happening on November 11 and 12.

Ms Ardern will be rubbing shoulders with 20 world leaders including US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The Kiwi Prime Minister will be making her first appearance on Friday at 2pm NZT when she gives a joint speech on renewable energy and sustainable growth with the Vice President of Exxon Mobil.

1 NEWS political editor Corin Dann believes her biggest test at the forum will be around TPP 11 negotiations.

"Jacinda Ardern wants changes to that deal, with it very much at its final stages. Can she convince them to make adjustments around those investment rules, if she can't does New Zealand sign up," Dann said.

There is a potential for division in the left if the Prime Minister does sign off on TPP 11 with no changes, as the Greens told Dann they'd be uncomfortable with the deal if no concessions are made.

1 NEWS NOW will be bringing you all the latest updates on the Prime Minister's first big test on the international stage as it unfolds.
