Iwi impose ban on fishing seafood at popular Northland beach: 'The barren-ness is very real'

Whetu Rutene said the iwi’s two-year ban on taking seafood from the popular Northland beach is barely enough to replenish stocks.

Local iwi have imposed a ban on fishing seafood from the popular Northland beach Maitai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula.

The rahui will start on the 20 December and last two years to protect the fisheries.

Rahui coordinator Whetu Rutene says it comes after extensive hui and consultation.

Maori on the Karikari Peninsula are introducing a two-year rahui at Matai Bay.

"The reason that we're putting the rahui in place is that the bay behind us has got to a state where it's just completely kina barren," Mr Rutene said.

"The balance of the whole area is just unbalanced.

"This particular area is not an isolated issue within this space, the whole area and probably areas beyond this peninsular have this sort of issue."

Common sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus (kina).

He says while it can't be legally enforced he's had plenty of support from the community and expects it will be respected.
