Heavy rain and strong winds cause surface flooding, road closures across Coromandel

April 29, 2018

Heavy rain and strong winds overnight have caused surface flooding across the Coromandel today.

New Zealand Civil Defence has warned that more wild weather is expected later this evening.

“We expect another 100mm of rain today, which on top of the 120mm we have already received in the last 24 hours, may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly," the Thames-Coromandel District Council said in a statement.

"Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous. Road closures are likely as more heavy rain is expected."

By 11.30am, Hot Water Beach Road and State Highway 25 from Whangamata to Waihi were closed due to the wild weather.

Wentworth Valley Road is closed after it was blocked by flash flooding late last night.

Meanwhile, downpours in Rotorua have caused severe flooding through central roads and multiple slips throughout the region.

MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Rotorua from 9am today to 12am Monday.

The meteorological service have also issued heavy rain warnings for the Coromondal Peninsula, the Bay of Plenty east and west of Whakatane, Gisborne north of Tokomaru Bay, Canterbury from the Rakaia southward, Dunedin, and north Otago near and north of the Otago Peninsula.
