Hamilton dairy owner installs security cage after being hit with machete during robbery

April 3, 2018

A Hamilton dairy owner has installed metal self-locking doors at his dairy after a robbery last month left him with a fractured skull.

Sandip Patel of Hamilton East's Emm Jay Dairy was attacked by two masked robbers wielding a machete, and has now taken measures to stop it happening again.

The system at Mr Patel's dairy allows customers to enter and exit only when the shopkeeper unlocks the door remotely.

"Now if somebody comes along with their hood up or a bandanna I will ask them to take it off before I let them in, otherwise they can go somewhere else," Mr Patel told the NZ Herald.

"This is a very good system for me, makes me feel more comfortable, and good for customers too."

The cage system cost between $8000 and $9000 to install.

Two people aged 16 and 17 have been arrested and charged over the incident last month.
