Greymouth shooting: Man accused of murder appears in court

The suspected Greymouth gunman has been arrested this afternoon after being on the run for almost 24 hours.

A 45-year-old man has appeared in court, charged with the murder of Hayley Williams in Greymouth on Sunday.

The accused, who was granted interim name suppression, appeared this morning in the Greymouth District Court.

Mother of three Ms Williams was fatally shot at a house in Marsden Rd on Sunday afternoon, sparking an Armed Offenders Squad call out.

Several children, including her own, were at her home when she was shot. The 43-year-old died at the scene.

There were emotional scenes as the accused appeared in court, with two people having to be removed by security guards.

The accused has yet to enter a plea and has been remanded in custody.

He will appear via video link in the High Court at Christchurch on November 10.
