The government has been reviewing the relationship between renters and landlords with changes on tenancy rules set to be announced today.
MP Phil Twyford wants to limit rent increases to just once each year, 1 NEWS understands.
Currently, landlords can increase the rent every six months with landlords and renters also having to agree what the formula looks like with regards to rent increases.
It's believed Mr Twyford also wants to limit rent bidding, which is when landlords or property managers offer a property at a certain price but then offer it to someone else if they agree to pay extra.
Through this, the government hopes to balance out the relationship between the landlord and the tenant.
Mr Twyford has previously said the current law is outdated.
