Fire burning out-of-control at Shipwreck Bay, Northland, six houses evacuated

February 8, 2019

The blaze is now under control but several homes were threatened.

A fire has broken out overnight at Shipwreck Bay near Ahipara, Northland.

Emergency services were called at about 1:23am to a large scrub fire covering about five hectares above Shipwreck Bay.

Six houses have been evacuated as the fire burns out-of-control - at one point fire crews had to stand down as the blaze was so intense.

Now with daylight, three monsoon helicopters are pouring water over the blaze and two fire crews are on the ground.

Police have been helping with the evacuation of residents on Foreshore Road – they are yet to ascertain how many are affected.
