April 8, 2020

Dr Ashley Bloomfield Director-General of Health made the announcement today.

There are now 1210 cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand with 50 new cases announced today.

The new cases are made up of 26 confirmed cases and 24 probable cases.

Dr Ashley Bloomfield, Director-General of Health made the announcement today, joined by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Dr Bloomfield said yesterday the country had the highest number of tests processed reported in any one day, at 4098. However the testing capacity for the virus continues to grow with stock available for 50,000 tests.

"For the cases we have information on we are seeing a strong link to overseas travel," Dr Bloomfield said.

Two hundred and eighty two people have recovered from the virus, with 12 people in hospital. Four of those people are in intensive care with two of those people in a critical condition.

Community transmission remains at two per cent, and an investigation into 12 per cent of potential community cases is still underway.

There have been no additional deaths following that of West Coast woman Anne Guenole on 29 March.

With 50 new cases announced today, it is the lowest number of new cases reported in a day in two weeks. Yesterday's number of cases both confirmed and probable went up by 54, 13 less than Monday's announcement of 67 and 32 less than Sunday's 86 cases.

The Prime Minister said despite that, there could still be "bumps along the way".

"But as I said yesterday I remain cautiously optimistic that we are starting to turn a corner.

"It's all the more reason to stay the course of our self-isolation as a nation."

She said New Zealand needs to continue to uphold the rules of Level 4.

The latest case update in New Zealand comes as the total number of cases around the world has surpassed 1.4 million. The US now has the greatest number of cases with the amount of infected people nearing 400,000.
