They don’t have a receipt and were unable to track down the company.

A Scottish couple were charged nearly $1000 for a five-minute taxi ride in Wellington.

John and Susan Barrett say they travelled from the Wellington Railway station to Johnston Street, according to Stuff.

The meter reportedly showed $10 once they arrived, but it was obscured when Mr Barrett paid.

Later that evening, his MasterCard Travelex card showed a charged for $930 for "Taxi Wellington".

He did not get a receipt but told Stuff the taxi had a white roof with a sign that said "Wellington" on the top.

Mr Barrett contacted numerous Wellington taxi companies, but was unable to find the taxi he travelled in.

MasterCard is now handling the dispute.
