Dunedin police beef up numbers for infamous Hyde Street student party

Otago students have come out in force for the annual dress up party.

More police have been rostered on this Saturday for the infamous Hyde Street party in Dunedin.

The annual party is for Otago University students hosted by those living on Hyde Street and the Otago University Students Association (OUSA).

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield told 1 NEWS additional staff have been rostered on to manage the demand the party may create.

"We want to ensure there is a safe environment for all students attending the party," he said.

Police say they've been working with OUSA and other agencies to get safety messages across to all students.

"We encourage people attending to look after each other, not drink to excess and make responsible decisions," Mr Butterfield said.

Last year nearly 4000 students attended the event.

Police made arrests at the party in 2015.

The Hyde Street student party hasn't been without incident despite new management.

Safety measures ramp up for Dunedin's Hyde Street student party attended by thousands.

Student safety was a big focus at the event in 2016.
