Cop car's bonnet stomped during out-of-control car scene event in Christchurch

A police vehicle suffered minor damage after a disorderly mob descended on it as officers responded to an out-of-control car event on Saturday night.

Police confirmed they attended a callout on Sawyers Arms Road about 11.15pm on Saturday night, where multiple cars and people were blocking the roads.

"A police patrol vehicle was set upon on arrival," a police spokesperson said.

"A deterrence operation was undertaken by police to prevent further anti-social behaviour."

Footage posted online from the event show crowds of people numbering in the hundreds, with many drivers taking turns to do burnouts and skids.

The cars pictured are typically high-powered modified vehicles.

Police said no arrests were made and no injuries were reported, and also said they are making further inquiries into the event.

Organisers of the event posted on the page that further such events are planned for the future.

Christchurch has long had an issue with "boy racers", and introduced a bylaw in 2010 banning "cruising", but police have admitted it is difficult to police.

According to the Land Transport Act, it is prohibited to drive in convoys that impede traffic flow, or to repeatedly cruise the same stretch of road in a manner which "draws attention to the power or sound of the engine of the motor vehicle being driven".

A "skid pad" was available at Christchurch's Ruapuna Speedway up until 2016, but it was formally discontinued due to a lack of use.

The organiser of the event has been approached for comment.
