Cantabrians want permanent memorial for terror attack victims

September 15, 2019

Attention is turning to a permanent memorial to the 51 victims as Christchurch marks that horrific day six months ago.

Cantabrians are calling for a permanent memorial to honour the lives that were lost in the Christchurch terrorist attacks on March 15.

The attack claimed 51 lives and shaped the city with locals believing it is important to have a place where people can remember the victims.

“A lot of offers have been made, like people proposing works of art and a whole range of ideas.” Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel told 1 News.

“It’s too soon to say how that will be but there will be something that will pay tribute.”

The council says a permanent memorial is important for the city and while the community should have some input, the process should be led by Christchurch's Muslim community.

“I think the most important thing is to treat our local Muslim community with utmost respect and they need to lead the process.”

“It was their mosques that were attacked, and it will require a good level of conversation about how they both respond to and manage the development of a suitable memorial that enables people to properly pay their respects to those who were taken from us on that day.”

In the meantime, Canterbury Museum will provide long-term care for some of the objects featuring in this weekend's exhibition.
