Police trying to track down a motorcyclist seen speeding at nearly 200 kilometres an hour south of Dunedin say the speed the rider reached is "beyond dangerous".

Police are appealing for information about the incident on Saturday, or the rider involved.

An Aprilia SV1000 motorcycle was spotted by police travelling on State Highway 1, near the township of Waihola, at 199 km/h.

"The speed this rider reached is beyond dangerous, the risk they posed to themselves and other road users is unimaginable," Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said today.

"Had they crashed they would have killed themselves and possibly other road users.

"This behaviour is unacceptable and puts others at risk," Mr Dinnissen said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact their local police station or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
