Ban on prisoners voting is lawful, NZ highest court has ruled

December 14, 2018

Inmate Arthur William Taylor had argued parliament was wrong to impose the ban.

The highest court in the land has ruled the ban on prisoner voting is lawful.

The Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by inmate Arthur Taylor, which argued Parliament was wrong in imposing the ban.

The court last month ruled that the removal of voting rights breached the Bill of Rights, but the Government's yet to act on it.

Those taking the case say the next move is to lodge a complaint with the United Nations' Human Rights Committee.
