NIWA climate scientist Chris Brandolino says it’s time to against our rising temperatures.

Auckland's sizzling start to 2019 has been broken by heavy rain across the region this morning, with a cool weather band breaking the stifling humidity around the city over the past week or so.

It's been the same for much of the North Island today.

"A wet start with a rain laden frontal system moving over the North Island this morning," MetService said.

"Many of you across North Island towns would have had a wet commute to work this morning. The hot muggy nights have made way for bands of rain followed by cool south to southwest winds."

But for those in and around Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton , this is only a temporary blip, with hot weather expected to return from tomorrow until at least the end of next week.

The mercury is expected to soar again from tomorrow, with plenty of sun and temperatures of 24 to 28 degrees forecast cross the regions over the next 10 days.
