Auckland Mayor Phil Goff recovering after heart surgery

April 16, 2018
The Mayor told TVNZ’s Q+A programme the council doesn’t need “extravagant expenditure” like the Mayoral car.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff is "recovering nicely" after undergoing unplanned heart surgery at Auckland Hospital on Saturday, a spokesperson says.

Mr Goff was admitted for an unplanned angioplasty operation and is likely to stay in hospital for "a few more days and be back at work next week".

An angioplasty is an operation where surgeons widen an artery passage, typically to the heart, using a small inflatable mesh in order to improve blood flow.

Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore will be stepping in for some of the Mayor's duties during his absence.
