America's Cup setup in Auckland being considered this week

November 20, 2017

Thousands lined the central city streets as the Auld Mug did the rounds.

Negotiations will begin today to decide the Auckland location of the America's Cup base for the 2021 event.

Team New Zealand is facing an uphill battle to get its $190m Halsey Wharf extension approved in the Wynyard Quarter.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff favours a cheaper option of setting up several bases across multiple wharves around Wynyard Quarter.

A decision on how the event will be set up will be made on Thursday.

The capital turned on some good weather as the America's Cup came to town.

Auckland last hosted the America's Cup in 2000, and won decisively at this year's event in Bermuda.
