$20m safety boost measures announced for Manawatu-Whanganui, Hawke's Bay and Gisborne highways

Nine stretches of state highway in Manawatu, Whanganui, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions will receive safety improvements to the tune of $20m.

Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter announced today that more roads will be upgraded as part of the Government's Safety Boost Programme.

The upgrades will include rumble strips, improved signage, shoulder widening and safety barriers in high-risk spots.

Ms Genter said "All drivers make mistakes from time to time.

"Safety improvements like these stop simple mistakes turning into tragedies."

The stretches of road to be improved are:

Manawatu-Wanganui

• SH56: Makerua (SH57) to Palmerston North
• SH57: SH3 to SH56
• SH3: Palmerston North to Ashhurst
• SH4: Whanganui to Raetihi
• SH54: SH3 to Feilding

Hawke's Bay and Gisborne

• SH2: Wairoa to Gisborne
• SH35: Gisborne to Tolaga Bay
• SH2: Gisborne to Matawai
• SH5: SH2 to Te Haroto.
