Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland has been the subject of social media backlash after asking fans to donate money to help with a family tragedy via her Instagram and Twitter accounts.
A GoFundMe page was set up for Hyland's 14-year-old cousin Trevor and her uncle after they were involved in an alleged drink driving accident on the weekend that left Trevor dead and her uncle in hospital.
The fundraising page was then setup by Trevor's sister Tessa to help fund funeral costs and medical expenses for Hyland's hospitalised uncle.
The campaign quickly exceeded its $US25,000 goal, raising more than $US30,000 in one day with the help of Hyland's fanbase.
"Please DONATE," Hyland emplored her 1.55 million Twitter followers as she posted a link to the GoFundMe page.
However, people on social media were quick to point out the fact that with Hyland's highly paid role on Modern Family, which is estimated to have netted her around $US9 million to date by news.com.au , she could have easily covered the costs herself.
"You make enough money to cover the expenses I'm just curious why your asking," one person posted in response.
After the backlash Hyland responded with the following tweet, outraged at some of the comments received.
The GoFundMe campaign is currently at $US32,192 at the time of writing.
