TVNZ Highlights: 16 - 22 May
It's love, murder and revenge with The Luminaries, this week on TVNZ!
World premiere - sunday 17th May, 8.30pm on TVNZ 1 + all episodes available on TVNZ OnDemand from Sunday 17th
It’s 1865 and Anna Wetherell (Eve Hewson) has travelled to New Zealand to forge a new life. On the last day of her voyage, a romantic first encounter with the radiant Emery Staines (Himesh Patel) fills her with great expectations for what lies ahead. But the scheming fortune-teller Lydia Wells (Eva Green) has other ideas for Anna and lays a trap to ensure that the planned rendezvous between the young lovers never takes place.
Deceived, swindled, and betrayed, Anna’s fortunes begin to fall. But the bond between these star-crossed lovers is more than mere affinity. Anna and Emery are what is known as ‘astral twins’: they were born at the very same instant, and under the very same sky, which means that they share a single destiny.
When Emery vanishes without a trace, leaving Anna without an alibi for a murder she did not commit, the noose of the plot begins to tighten around her. Faced with the impossible, she must ask: do we make our fortunes, or does fortune make us?
MKR: The Rivals
Monday 1th - Tuesday 19th May, 7.30pm on TVNZ 2
For the first time in MKR history, it’s Chef vs Chef and House vs House, as five fan-favourite teams from previous seasons go head-to-head with five new teams in the fiercest competition yet.
The Fans will live together and represent the House of Colin, while the Faves share digs and fight for the House of Manu. Teams will compete for their Houses and then, ultimately, for themselves, cooking under the guidance of mentors Manu Feildel or Colin Fassnidge, while Pete Evans dines as the impartial judge.
Adding a bit of spice to the competition are two Kiwi teams – Ben & Vasil and Mark & Lauren.
As the competition progresses, the rivalry between Chefs and Houses heats up, with teams producing some of the most exceptional dishes ever served on MKR. Ultimately, only one team can be crowned MKR: The Rivals champions and win $100,000. Will it be a Fan or Fave?

Snort: Live brings Auckland’s best loved improv comedy troupe – and their late-night on-the-spot antics – to TVNZ OnDemand in a series of shows filmed live at Basement Theatre.
With a cult following and weekly sell-out shows, Snort: Live is a comedy show that’s quite unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Loose, absurd and bitingly smart, the Snort cast take turns at accepting a random word from the audience to inspire an impromptu monologue. From this monologue the team build an entire show of intricate, high-stakes comedy – made up entirely on the spot!
It’s silly, surprising, and sometimes downright saucy, as NZ’s funniest improvisers pull scenes out of thin air for a show chock-full of hare-brained nonsense.
Starring a rotating ensemble cast of NZ's best young comedians, it’s a comedy show that’s different every single time you see it.
The cast of Snort: Live includes a star-studded line-up of kick-ass NZ comedians and improvisers including Guy Montgomery, Laura Daniel, Eli Matthewson, Alice Snedden, Nic Sampson, Donna Brookbanks, Chris Parker, Tom Sainsbury, Brynley Stent, Kura Forrester, Rhiannon McCall, Hamish Parkinson, Joseph Moore and Eddy Dever.
The British Tribe Next Door
Wednesday 20th May, 8.30pm on TVNZ 1
In a ground-breaking new series, Googlebox star Scarlett Moffatt and her family are moved from the UK and transplanted into a replica of their terraced family home in the middle of a Namibian tribal village. Their home is complete with running water, electricity, and all their possessions and mod cons – from hair straighteners to metal detectors, iPhones to frozen ready-meals, and of course, the all-important family television.
The Moffatts join a small village of semi-nomadic Himba cattle-herders, who live largely traditional lives. Striking differences quickly emerge. Exploring the terraced house for the first time, the tribe members have strong reactions to everything from biscuits to the microwave; the bedrooms to the stairs that led up to them; and even the hallway mirror.
Through this reverse anthropological exchange, the Moffatts face questions and judgments from their hosts, and are forced to reconsider their own assumptions and way of life. Beauty and body image, the wealth gap, social media, sex and infidelity, consumption and waste, and the roles of men and women – all come under the microscope in this funny, poignant and life-affirming series.

The brilliant science fiction series, The 100, is back for an epic seventh season!

With this credo in mind, Clarke and Bellamy lead a group down to this mysterious world, hoping to start anew, to finally find peace. But old habits die hard, and when they discover an idyllic society, it quickly becomes clear that not everything on Sanctum is as perfect as it seems.
Despite their determination to do better, threats both seen and unseen, will once again force our heroes to fight for their lives and the future of humanity.
