Shows You Might Have Missed: The Catherine Tate Show
Each week, we take a look at some of our favourite offbeat shows that might not have made it onto your radar.
Foul-mouthed grannies and stroppy schoolgirls reign supreme in iconic sketch comedy The Catherine Tate Show.
Famous for sending up age-old archetypes of British society and coining classic catch-phrases (“Am I bovvered?”) comedian Catherine Tate is often described as the funniest woman in Britain – and The Catherine Tate Show is where it all started.
From Lauren the stroppy teenager, to Derek Faye the closeted Bachelor, to Nan the foulmouthed sweet little old lady, Catherine’s larger-than-life characters and iconic sketches have seen the show become a cult favourite all over the world.
With appearances from stars like Dominic West (The Wire), David Tennant (Broadchurch), Kathy Burke (8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown) and singer Charlotte Church, Catherine – who has also starred in shows like Doctor Who and The Office – is never too star-struck to send up her guests, often in fabulously off-colour fashion.
With nominations for six BAFTAs, two British Comedy Awards and an Emmy Award, and having won two Royal Television Society Awards, two British Comedy Awards and a National Television Award since its debut in 2004, The Catherine Tate Show remains one of the most beloved shows in modern British comedy history.
