Shows You Might Have Missed: Stella
Each week, we take a look at some of our favourite offbeat shows that might not have made it onto your radar.
As comforting as a cup of tea and a warm blanket, warm and witty feel-good comedy Stella is the perfect antidote to the woes of the world.
For Stella, a 40-something single mum juggling family, friends and her children’s fathers in the small Welsh village of Pontyberry, it’s not always easy to get it right.
Between making last minute costumes for school plays, visiting her wayward eldest son in prison, having girl time with her boozy funeral director sister-in-law and earning a living doing all the washing Pontyberry’s locals, things don’t always go to plan – least of all where Stella’s love life is concerned.
Yet for Stella, and the eccentric friends and neighbours who surround her, muddling through life’s little problems is all part of the fun.
Co-written and starring Ruth Jones (Gavin and Stacey, Tess of the Durbervilles), Stella is as relatable as it is raucous, comfortingly creating comedy from the day-to-day foibles everyone experiences sometimes.
Full of familiar faces including Catrin Stewart (Doctor Who), Patrick Baladi (The Office), Elizabeth Berrington (Doctor Who) and Mark Lewis Jones (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), as well as some very unexpected cameos from stars like James Cordon and Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant, Stella’s cast of weird and wonderful characters will have you feeling like you’ve known them all your life.
Warm, witty and wonderfully charming, Stella is the good-natured giggle-worthy comedy we all need in our lives.
