The X-Files: Goodbye Scully
Gillian Anderson reveals this will be her last season.
Dana Scully is one half of TV’s most iconic sci-fi duo.
However, 24 years after the show’s launch, Emmy award winning actress Gillian Anderson has decided to close the door on her signature role.
Anderson explained that although she’s eternally grateful for the opportunity, she’s ready to move on.
“I don’t want to be tied down, doing one thing for months and months. I like to be challenged as an actor, that’s why I got into this business. It’s time to hang up Scully’s hat.”
The idea of Scully’s retirement was first mentioned at last year’s Comic-Con event, but fans refused to believe it.
When asked whether there’s any possibility of a reunion down the track, Anderson was adamant. “No, this is it for me. I’m really serious.”
Anderson’s decision confirms that the current season of The X-Files will likely be the last.
“For me, The X-Files is Mulder and Scully,” said series creator Chris Carter. “If it were without Scully, I wouldn’t do it.”
Long-time co-star David Duchovny seemed untroubled by the impending conclusion. “I’m good either way. I’m good, you know, with this being the end.”
The latest season is only two episodes into its run, with eight more still to come. It's going to be one revealing series finale... we hope.
