Despite being relative newcomers, Maimoa Music has already ticked off a number of goals this year.
The 12-member super group starred in their own reality TV show, Voices of Our Future (VOOF); featured in Dave Dobbyn’s te reo Māori version of his iconic waiata Welcome Home; and performed at the Lions-Māori All Blacks game held in Rotorua. On top of that, the video for their single Wairua is the most viewed YouTube video in the country for 2017, racking over 3.1 million views since May.
Member Awatea Wihongi says the journey hasn’t been without trials.
“Tino taumaha te haere, engari i noho tahi mātou. Me kī, he maha ngā piki, he maha hoki ngā heke.”
The group is expecting another busy year in 2018, getting straight into it this summer with performances at some of the hottest summer concerts.
“Ko ngā konohete kei te heke mai, arā, ko te Kotahi Aroha-One Love,” te kī a Mereana Teka, “arā tētahi atu ko East Coast Vibes.”
For Ngā Tui a Rehua, the trio Wihongi, Teka and Metotagivale Schmidt-Peke – jokingly referred to as ‘Toru-Hau-Tekau-Mā-Rua’ for this segment – performed the kōhanga reo classic, Kua Tipu Rā.
“I hiahia mātou ki te whakanui i te āhuatanga o te kōhanga reo i te mea kua tipu mātou ki roto i te kōhanga reo,” te kī a Schmidt-Peke.
