Thor: Ragnarok now features Māori subtitles which were provided by Matewa Media, which is owned by Taika Waititi’s sister.

Tweedie Waititi says her work in translating big blockbuster movies is about getting our language out there.

“Kia rangona te ao i te reo Māori, a, ki ahau nei he mea nui kia tukuna tō tātou reo ki te ao.”

The te reo Māori translations were done by Matewa Media, who also translated the Disney film 'Moana.'

“Ko Waldo Houia, Katarina Edmonds me Rob Ruha koina tō mātou tīma i whakamāori i te kiriata nei o Moana - ahakoa i noho mātou i waenganui i Te Tairāwhiti, Te Whānau a Apanui mō te kiriata o Moana tēnei kiriata nā ko te reo ōpaki, kāore he iwi tāpiri ki tēnei ko Aotearoa whānui.”

You can access reo subtitles on board Air which will soon be released on DVD.

So one must ask, what motivated Waititi to translate famous films?

“Māua ko Taika, tō mātou whānau katoa, paku nei ō mātou reo i a mātou e tipu ana nā reira he mea nui kia whai tātou i ēnei momo rauemi hei tohatoha ki te ao, ki te iwi Māori, otirā, ki ā tātou tamariki.”

Air NZ said in a statement:

"It's important we celebrate the use of Te Reo Māori and we believe our customers respond positively to this."

Meanwhile, Tweedie has also been nominated for the Te Reo Champion Award at the WIFT TV and Media awards for her efforts in normalising te reo in this realm.

“Kāore au i te whai whakaaro mō aua mea, te whiwhi taonga, ki a au nei he hōnore nui.”

Matewa Media will continue to do this type of work and Waititi says buckle up as there are other big things in the pipeline.
