Considered one of the strongest regions for kapa haka, the Te Arawa Regionals are underway in Rotorua.

But before veteran rōpū like Te Mātārae I Ōrehu and Tūhourangi-Ngāti Wāhiao try to win the judges over today, kuia and kaumātua were first to take to the stage yesterday.

It's only fair that the locals, and indeed the eldest, kicked off the competition.

That includes the likes of Ngā Pākeke o Ngāti Whakaue, who are all over 90 years of age.

But while they may be in their twilight years, they're still full of pep.

Even their legs can’t stop them, with a lot of them performing while seated.

Te Arawa's top teams take to the stage today.
