It was a rough Thursday night for the North Island as the year's first storm rolled in.

Tauranga was one of the worst hit overnight as strong winds and king tides caused chaos.

Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park manager Mark Hales says, “I’ve been here long enough now and been through quite a few storms and you worry all of the time about what could happen.”

Homes across the city had their power cut, with many still out this morning.

The storm rolled across the North Island, closing off roads including Tamaki Drive in central Auckland.

Emergency services were also kept busy and not even the strongest of trees could withstand the winds, felling one of the best plum trees in Huntly.

The storm continues its journey across the country today.
