Laura Langman has been named as captain of the Silver Ferns with the predecessor, Katrina Grant, named vice-captain.

The veteran midcourt says she is excited to be named the captain.

“Yes, really humbling to have gone through the process with the team and have come out the other side.”

The 3-2-1 system was brought in from Head Coach Noeline Taurua to know the landscape of the team.

Taurua says it’s a system she learnt across the ditch with the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

“It was acknowledging those ones who have been here before and giving them the opportunity to voice their opinion on who should be leading us through 2018.”

According to Taurua, the offset of the system is accountability for players and identifying leaders in the team.

“Other players have been identified as potential leaders and I think for Netball NZ in succession planning we need to get on to that.”

Despite Katrina Grant being demoted to Vice-Captain, shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit says having both as leaders are great for the team.

“Kātahi ano mātou kua whakamōhio mai, ēngari, he kaiārahi rawe hoki ia.

“He tino hoa rāua ko Laura.

“Ki a au nei he pai mānā hei hāpai i a Laura, te mahi kapene.”

The road forward can now begin for the Silver Ferns playing the England Roses on Saturday.
