Shortage of teachers sparks concern with NZEI Te Riu Roa
Teacher's union NZEI Te Riu Roa says the industry is struggling to find and retain new teachers, and for Māori language teachers the situation is even worse.
Forecasts predict there'll be an extra 40, 000 primary schools students by 2030, requiring more than 1,800 additional teachers.
While the shortage of teachers a big concern, the union says for Māori language teachers it's beyond crisis point.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins says they're doing their best to fix up what they say is nine years of neglect.
NZEI Te Riu Roa is considering strike action on August 15.
