Seafood raided by poachers in an East Coast reserve
By Te Karere Zero tolerance for people caught poaching in marine reserves.
That is the stance and warning from the Department of Conservation and the Ministry of Primary Fisheries after 16 people were caught with seafood harvested from Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve north of Gisborne.
The reserve was established by Ngāti Kōnohi and the Department of Conservation in 1999.
The illegal haul included 55 crayfish and more than 600 kina.
A number of vehicles were seized and all alleged offenders are likely to face court action.
