A Rotorua shelter for the homeless was shut down for health and safety reasons will be reopened but at a different site.

After months of fighting to keep their doors open visions of a helping hand has received building consent from the council to reopen.

Tiny Deane ran the shelter for quite some time as a place for the homeless to find shelter at night but the former shelter closed its doors last week as the council had declared it unfit and dangerous.

The numbers of homeless in Rotorua continues to grow and Deane and his colleagues are focused 100% on the brand new shelter.

Those carrying out the refurbishment work on the shelter say it will take three weeks to fix up.
