The Government's and Auckland Council's proposed base for the America's Cup has been given the thumbs down by mana whenua Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.

Hasley St Wharf is being proposed as the America's Cup base, however, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei say their objection is based on the recognition of the Waitematā Harbour as a taonga.

The iwi say the harbour has been significantly degraded by extensive developments and it's concerned about a proposal to extend the wharf by 75m.They want an option that has minimal impact on the harbour and is more cost effective.

Ngati Whātua say that along with other iwi in the Tāmaki Makaurau region, they are eager to support the America's Cup and ensure Māori maximise the significant opportunities the event will bring, ranging from jobs in the sailing industry through to supply of goods and services.
