New Zealand's only men's maximum security prison at Auckland's Paremoremo Prison was officially opened.

The new prison which cost $300 million to build, replaces the existing east division of the prison built 50 years ago.

Decked out with razor wire, energised wall fence and infrared censoring, the new facility was built through a Public Private Partnership between the Crown and the consortium Next Step Partner and will house a total of 260 maximum and high-security male prisoners.

More than 90% of prisoners have mental health or substance abuse issues.

At this facility the first-ever sensory garden, with an on-site purpose-built mental health unit called 'Kia Mau Kia Mataara' to deal with up 68 prisoners with all different mental needs.

Prisoners will be moved in from mid-September, and the old facility will close in October.
