A name change to a government ministry came into effect yesterday only nine months after the new ministry was created.

The word 'vulnerable' was dropped from the Ministry for Children while its Māori language version 'Oranga Tamariki' will remain unchanged.

The Children's Minister, Tracey Martin, says while the name change is symbolic, it means a lot for those in care and for the people who work with tamariki at risk.

The ministry will be now known as - Oranga Tamariki, The Ministry for Children.
