New research suggests the number of strokes being suffered by New Zealanders will increase by 40% in the next 10 years due to the country's growing and ageing population.

At present, stroke is the second biggest killer in NZ with around 2,500 people dying each year.

The Stroke Foundation's CEO says they're not surprised by the high figure.

Stroke is largely preventable, yet about 9000 New Zealanders every year have a stroke.
