NIWA records 2017 as NZ’s fifth warmest year
By Te Karere
The country recorded its fifth warmest year in more than a century, and while it wasn't as hot as 2016, there were droughts as well as major storms like Cyclone Debbie and Cook which wreaked havoc in places like Edgecumbe in April.
The weather in 2017 has been marked as the year of extremes by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA).
Meanwhile, Civil Defence issued a new record of eight weather-related states of emergencies last year.
