New initiative encourages more play for better sleep with children
Toddlers, who play hard, sleep well and that's a critical element to their healthy development.
A new initiative aimed at getting more under-fives to play regularly and have quality sleep was launched today by the Ministry of Health.
The free online resources have been created by health agency Toi Tangata and creator Darrio Penetito-Hemara says it’s been given the seal of approval by kōhanga reo.
“He aronga pai, he aronga tika tēnei i roto i te ao hauora kia kaua rawa e aro noa iho ki te reo ko ōna mea katoa ōroto. Kia aro ki te taha hauora ki ngā mokopuna.”
New resources designed to provide 'active play' for children under five, predominantly for teachers in kōhanga reo.
Penetito-Hemara says they are also easily transferable to early childhood educators, whānau and any other groups.
“Ko ngā rauemi i puta ko tētahi oriori ko tētahi waiata a tokorua ngā kiriata i aro ana ki te ao o Tāne Mahuta me ōna mokopuna hei nekehanga, ā kua whakaritea he karakia me ētahi rauemi hei tautoko.”
Toi Tangata developed the bilingual resource working alongside Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust and the resources will be available for all Kōhanga Reo around NZ and available online for everyone else.
