It's a significant year for women in New Zealand, celebrating the 125 years of women's suffrage.
The Minister for Women Julie Ann Genter wants to see a 50:50 split of men and women on the boards of government agencies.
Traci Houpapa, the chairperson of the Federation of Māori Authorities says there are examples within Māoridom that government departments could emulate in order to achieve this goal.
Houpapa also says New Zealand has been a world leader when it comes to promoting gender equality.
