The number of people who have died from suspected suicide has increased and the Mental Health Foundation is urging the public to reach out to friends and whānau as news like this could be overwhelming for some.

Māori still feature high in the latest suspected suicide statistics

Mental Health Foundation Māori Development Manager Ellen Norman says the foundation is saddened at the recent statistics released.

"The stats released show that our male men have high figures and are featuring really high.

"For me, it's about our women taking care of our men at this time, for those who might be feeling vulnerable."

Compared to last year, cases of suspected suicide have increased by more than 60.

More than 140 cases were Māori, more than half were Māori men.

Norman says the community must work together to help bring the statistics down for the coming years.
